More shoppers are using ecommerce sites on their phones to interact further with companies as the spending experience becomes more interactive.
IMRG and eDigitalResearch found that smartphones and other devices are being used by shoppers to give feedback, check stock levels and look to see where the best prices are.
One in four shoppers that were questioned said that they had used a barcode scanner on their smartphone to help check prices on a website elsewhere, suggesting that ecommerce sites are increasingly important.
eDigitalResearch's research director, Derek Eccleston, said that both retailers and shoppers can benefit from a change in technology use.
"We are seeing the dawn of MEcommerce with digital now truly coming to the high street with consumers using technology to provide feedback and check prices with suppliers whilst the staff within stores are utilising the digital technology to offer the consumer excellent customer service by checking stock levels," he said.
Earlier this week, IMRG announced that online spending in the UK rose by 25 per cent in December.
