'Potential lucrative territories' await firms during domain name introduction
Businesses will be rushing to "potentially lucrative territories" that will form when the world's domain name organiser releases new suffixes in the coming year.
That is according to Ian Shapira, writing for The Washington Post, who wrote that the potential for money-making will see companies move quickly to get a custom address.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is set to finish talks on how to release the domain names in the coming months and will then give companies and governments the right to apply for suffixes.
Mr Shapira told the news provider that though there is uncertainty as to how the roll-out will affect the internet, businesses can ensure they are a step ahead in getting the domain name for their business.
"This massive expansion to the Internet's domain name system will either make the web more intuitive or create more cluttered, maddening experiences. No one knows yet," he said.
Last week it was revealed that the Internet Address and Naming Agency would be releasing the remaining seven blocks of domain names on the IPv4 system.
