Ecommerce sales were up 26 per cent compared to last year following a surge of spending on Black Friday, reports have shown.
According to spending figures from comScore, a market leader in measuring the amount of use from digital shopping sites, the holiday period where taxes were reduced boasted an $816 million (£523 million) total of revenue.
Furthermore, more than 50 million Americans visited online retail sites on the Friday after Thanksgiving, while shopping on the day of celebration jumped 18 per cent higher than last year to $479 million.
comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni said: "Despite some analysts' predictions that the flurry of brick-and-mortar retailers opening their doors early for Black Friday would pull dollars from online retail, we still saw a banner day for e-commerce with more than $800 million in spending."
He added that further sales increases are expected today (November 28th) as Cyber Monday gets underway.
The digital watchdog also revealed that US retail ecommerce spending for the first 25 days of the November-December holiday season is up 15 per cent over last year's total figures.
Matthew Hopkinson, a spokesman for Local Data Company suggested this festive period could signal the start of a battle between online retailers and the rest of the market.
He commented that offering discounts and special promotions over Christmas will go some way to encourage sales in the difficult economic climate, creating a further opportunity for increased online activity and profit.
Each of the top online retailers almost doubled their profits compared to last year's figures, data from comScore suggests. Amazon online and Walmart were the top two retailers to gain substantial growth in ecommerce activity during the promotional holiday event.
Mr Fulgoni mentioned that it is telling that the top multi-channel retailers showed strong growth in visitors as this demonstrates the importance of the online channel to the retail industry as a whole.
