Antivirus software provider McAfee has warned smartphone users about the dangers of online security breaches following significant growth in mobile malware threats.
The organisation insists consumers should increase their awareness of the type of issues they could face through downloading "bad apps", with knowledge allowing users to protect themselves and their data.
According to the company, this can be achieved by ensuring the services are downloaded from reputable stores, such as the Android Market, while avoiding installation of non-market applications.
This advice comes after the Forecast: Mobile Application Stores, Worldwide 2008-2015 report predicted 17.7 billion mobile apps are to be downloaded in 2011 alone, generating more than $15 billion (£9.4 billion) by next year.
Lawrence Pingree, Gartner analyst, said: "As the application market continues to boom, users should be more cautious that they know what they're installing."
Earlier this month, McAfee announced the latest enhancements to its Cloud Security Platform, which aims to address the concern expressed by business regarding data loss.
