Google wins domain name dispute with 'cyber-squatter'

Google wins domain name dispute with 'cyber-squatter'

Search giant Google has been given ownership of more than 750 domain names which had been bought by a 'cyber-squatter'.

Cyber-squatting refers to consumers who purchase domain names in bad faith to profit from a trademark belonging to someone else.

Chris Gillespie registered the hundreds of Google-related domain names including googlechevron.com,googlecoors.com, googlegaycruises.com and googledonaldtrump.com over February and March this year.

Google called it "one of the most aggressive campaigns of domain name infringement that they had ever encountered".

Mr Gillespie argued that Google's trademark was not protected because "Google" had become a generic verb that simply meant searching the web for information.

He even filed a petition with the US Patent and Trademark Office to have Google's trademark cancelled.

However, the National Arbitration Forum decreed that, by registering the domain names, Mr Gillespie had met the three requirements necessary to be called cyber-squatting: he had no rights or legitimate interests in the name, it was confusingly similar to an existing trademark, and it was being used in bad faith.

Google had complained that Mr Gillespie had redirected some of the domains to "a family of soon-to-be-launched gay interest websites", none of which were associated with the company's brand.
