Computer operating giant Microsoft has unveiled its new Windows 8 operating system, which is set to run on media tablets, as well as desktop and laptop PCs.
The software, set to be released in 2012, emerges as the company's response to innovative new products including Apple's iOS and the Google Android platform.
Unveiled at a developer's conference in California, Microsoft's new product is set to work on ARM-designed low power processors.
This innovation means the technology is set to be more effective when used on increasingly popular devices, such as smartphones and media tablets, which are expected to experience further growth.
Steve Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live division, said: "We reimagined Windows. From the chipset to the user experience, Windows 8 brings a new range of capabilities without compromise."
Earlier this month, Microsoft reported the introduction of the 737 Explained, which is a virtual model of the Boeing 737 and was created using the Windows Azure platform.
