Root or Plesk™?
An important decision you will need to make before you opt for a Hostway VPS, is whether to go for Root or Plesk administration, and the inherent difference this implies in terms of your experience in server management, and therefore what level of support you should expect.
The tables below are intended to assist you in your decision making process. Our sales team are happy to provide further information if you have additional questions in this area.
Root Access

Linux Root servers are best suited to hosting applications and more complex configurations where you need root level access and complete control over the server, such as Tomcat and Java solutions, specific Apache settings, and the ability to maintain sites and applications through SSH. With total control comes ultimate responsibilty. |
| Unmanaged |
Hostway's new range of Root VPS hand over comprehensive and direct contol over all aspects of the virtual server's management to the owner. They are intended for system administrators who are comfortable with the 'command line prompt', and who are happy with the running and updating of all applications and the operating system of their virtual server. In this sense, our Root VPS are categorised as 'Unmanaged'. |
| Support |
The level of support offered on the Root VPS platform is more limited. As a general rule, Hostway will support and monitor performance or reliability issues relating to the host server, but we will not support or monitor problems relating to configuration or software inside the Root administrator's VPS. Please check the VPS Support page for more details. |
| Recommendation |
For these reasons, we do not recommend Root level access to users with little or no previous experience of it. |
Plesk™
| Control Panel Administration |
A Plesk VPS solution represents the ideal environment for anyone upgrading from a shared hosting environment. The highly popular Plesk™ Control Interface allows the administrator to manage thousands of virtual hosts on a single machine - all with point-and-click simplicity. A plethora of Add-on Modules can be used to add further functionality to your VPS. (see Additional Options) |

Plesk™ deploys and configures all of the systems you need to run a web server. Tiered login levels provide encrypted and secure access for system administrators and domain resellers, their clients and domain owners alike. The system is configured, monitored and Managed by Hostway so that you don't have to. |
| Support |
Hostway will fully manage and support your Plesk VPS. This means that we are responsible for the operating system, patches and updates, and for providing support for your Plesk Control Panel. As you do not receive any root level access, if you have any problems or issues you can contact our Support department at any time - 24x7x365 with your query. If you do not have systems administration experience, or simply appreciate the functionality and useability of Plesk, choose a Plesk VPS. |
